Meet the Double Board

Double Board, originally uploaded by scjody.

This is the double board – just completed. It was originally designed for an art project called “double rainbow” that may someday be installed at a mall in Montréal or at Burning Man. For now, I’m doing a smaller project using some of the same hardware.

The new project will be installed at a secret event in Montréal on Saturday January 15 at 7 PM. Email me for directions.

It will also be installed at Toronto Decompression – Cold Compress on Saturday, January 22. See here for details on that event.

What does it do? You’ll have to come to one of those events to find out. Or I’ll probably blog about it after the events.

Technical details: it’s built on an Adafruit Protoshield connected to an Arduino Uno. Yes, that’s a DMX connector on the upper left. It still needs a box, and I may end up redoing the whole thing on a new board because the wiring and soldering is a bit rough.

Sophie & Charlemagne

For those of you who love kitties, Sophie and Charlemagne are leaving Montréal very early on Friday, heading west to (eventually) rejoin their humans in Mountain View.  You should stop by and visit before then, or just enjoy these photos

What a pair!

Winnipeg & Yellowknife

1

I’m back in Montréal now and (for the first time in over a year) I have no major trips planned!

A few weeks ago I flew to Winnipeg. I’d previously driven through there on my way back from Burning Man but Rachelle wasn’t around so I didn’t stop. This time I spent about 5 days there, long enough to really get a sense of the place. This was a bit of a change from my road trip in September, where I feel like I barely saw most places I stopped. So, Winnipeg… not a bad place, but not an amazing city either. My big complaint is that it’s really spread out. Hardly anyone lives a walking distance from downtown, and the transit isn’t great. Winnipeg Transit does do a good job with what they have (apart from inexplicably not supporting Google Transit) but it’s still infrequent, bus-based transit. Still, I had fun there!

Then a taxi ride to an airport ridiculously far out of town and a flight to Yellowknife, to visit Natasha. Yellowknife for me is a harder question. I definitely want to go back there. The big issue is "for how long"? I didn’t fall completely in love with the place as Natasha has (maybe the -10°C in October weather had something to do with it) but there’s something really neat about the place. It kind of feels like a frontier still. There’s a good number of people building interesting things, or meeting their needs in creative ways – like houseboats. Natasha lived on one earlier this year and we took a canoe (half walking on ice, half paddling) out to see some at one point. Houseboats are interesting in that they’re largely free of regulation. The lake (Great Slave Lake) is considered federal waters, so they’re exempt from municipal bylaws and most regulations, except the ones that concern barges on large waterways. But you can still paddle or walk to the city in 5-10 minutes. The big downsides are that you’re living without any services. You need to provide your own electricity, water infrastructure, sewage, and so on. Few houseboats have showers or flush toilets.

My current idea (which I admit probably isn’t actually feasible) is to build a houseboat in the shape of a polar bear, live in it for a bit, then sell it. More on polar bears later :)

So now I’m back in Montréal. I moved into a new apartment 2 weeks ago and started to look for work. Hopefully I’ll find the time to post more and upload the photos from my road trip… we’ll see.

I hope everyone reading this is doing well :) Thanks for being a part of my adventures.

Burning Man Photos

0

This year, for the first time, I brought a camera to Burning Man.. not to take photos of the art nor the burns — there are many far more talented photographers doing that already, and you can find their photos on flickr or google image search. I brought a camera to take photos of my camp and my friends. Here are some of them, and some others from campmates.

(no nudity, but there are people (including me) in their underwear.)

And for a bit of a status update… right now I’m in Winnipeg, MB visiting Rachelle and seeing the sights. On Thursday I’m flying to Yellowknife to visit Natasha, then I’m returning to Montréal… time to find a job and a more permanent place to live.

Driving, hot springs, cities, and more driving

0

I made it back to Montréal last Wednesday, and I’ll be in town for a couple of weeks apart from short trips. The trip home from Burning Man was great! I convinced Robin to join me for the first few days, and we drove north from Black Rock City to Portland, stopping at Crater Lake and several hot springs on the way. We both really enjoyed wandering around Portland, and I want to go back! We also had poutine at a food cart. Not great poutine, but poutine nonetheless.

Then we parted ways and I continued north to Seattle. I arrived just in time to hear j0seph play as part of TubaLuba in a music festival, then stayed with him for a few days. I’d forgotten how much we have in common other than computer stuff (which is how we met) and now I want more than ever to get a workspace back in Montréal where I can build things like silly bikes.

Vancouver was my next stop, to see the city and visit a friend from high school. He suggested I ride to Granville Island while he was at work, and once there I found the Fringe Festival! Of course I went to see a couple of plays before meeting him for drinks when he was done work – saw 52 pickup and Jem Rolls, both of which were great (not sure if either were in Montréal this year.. anyone else catch them?)

On my way out of Vancouver, I stopped by a scrap yard to get a power steering reservoir for the van. The current one is rusted out, and all 3 Chevy vans I looked at had some degree of rust there, so I wanted a nice shiny west coast one. Scrap yards are cool – a big field of junked cars that’s basically an open-air parts shop. You can get a pretty good view of the internals of a lot of them since many have their engines removed (and presumably sold.)

Then, more hot springs. I spent 3 days in the rockies visiting several of them, then drove east on the Trans Canada Highway. Northern Ontario is just a big as I remember from my bike trip but also really beautiful in places. The prairies are also (contrary to what everyone who hasn’t driven them assumes) not boring, and I saw an amazing sunset while driving through Saskatchewan! And then Montréal again… it’s good to be home :)

Van & more photos

Look at my van.

Here’s my van. I told you it was hilarious. Can you tell I’m on my way to Burning Man?

I’ve uploaded a bunch more photos:

Also more train thingies:

Ben Folds, November 17th, Boston

4

Anyone want to come see Ben Folds in Boston on November 17th?

Yeah, I know most of you stopped liking him in 1998 or so… it’s a guilty pleasure :)

Boston is a 5h drive away.  My plan is to drive down & sleep with couchsurfers or in my van (down by the river), then drive back sometime on the 18th.

Left coast adventures

0

OK, since my last real post… I made it to San Francisco in 6 days (5 days of driving and one day of the van breaking down), straight along the I-80. I did a few days of Burning Man preparation then I headed out to the desert, which was awesome as usual.

I’m now heading up the left coast, and Robin is joining me for the first bit. We’re taking our time, camping and sampling hot springs along the way, and we’ll hopefully be in Portland tonight.

After that, Seattle, Vancouver, then the Trans Canada east :) If you’re along my route, expect an email in the next few days because I want to meet up…. but definitely email me <scjody@modernduck.com> as well in case I don’t know you’re along the route!

:(

Aslan passed away this morning. I’m sad. He was such a great cat.

I can’t find a good photo right now but here he is:
