It’s way too hot.

Posted on August 3, 2007May 8, 2013 by scjody

“heat wave”:

random whining:

  • Yesterday was the first time ever that I couldn’t eat an ice cream cone quickly enough to stop it from melting down my hand (I eat quickly.)
  • Last night, I got to sleep OK, but then the smoke detector woke me up at 3:30 for no apparent reason. Then I couldn’t sleep.
  • Apparently installing an air conditioner in this apartment in any way that isn’t a brutal hack requires a split unit. That means professional installation and $1500-$2000. So even if I was willing to stick it to the environment, that’s way too much $ for the 5 days a year when I actually need one.

    Cheese sandwich?

Yeah. You know, the really boringly personal kind of blog entry that goes something like: “Today I had a cheese sandwich. It was very cheesy. I like cheese.”

The portable air conditioners are a bit ugly, but mean a lot less effort and more flexibility for installation. Of course, I don’t much believe in air conditioning, but then my lease forbids it anyway and it doesn’t bother me all that much.

Actually, at the moment it doesn’t bother me at all, as Britain is presently basking in perfectly temperate weather. Hooray for global climate change, given that I’m not in southern Europe where it’s a million and five degrees! :)

Portable AC would be the hack solution – I’d have to get one and massively extend + modify the outlet ducting since my bedroom window is weird. Plus they’re loud compared with window units and especially compared with split units.

But anyway, I don’t really need AC most of the time. Thursday night was the first night this year when I lost significant sleep without it.

Oh, and ice cream cone mess prevention has nothing to do with speed, it’s all about skill :) Keep the ice cream inside the edge of the cone, and you can basically take all the time in the world. Unless you bite the bottom off the cone. Don’t do that.

What do you mean by “inside the edge”? When you get a cone of any appreciable size, for example a medium or large from Ripples, the ice cream extends well beyond the cone boundaries. The cone I had on Thursday was sufficiently large that I couldn’t lick fast enough to consume all the melted ice cream on one side before the other side melted and ran down the cone / my hand. Oh well.

Would you like a fan? A tub of ice cream?

      I have both :)
