I climbed Kaimon Dake. It was a far more strenuous climb than Kibune and Kurama, but worth it for the views and the simple joy of climbing.
There is a small shrine at the top of the mountain. I think the spirit enshrined there is an alcoholic. Instead of the usual coin box, there were enough cans of sake to get seriously drunk, and a couple of sports drinks (for the inevitable hangover?)
Back down from Kaimon Dake and back onto the multispeed diesel for a groan and bounce back to Kagoshima – I’ll be spending the next 2 days there exploring the area (and its onsen (hot springs)!)

How long did it take you to climb to the summit? And can you do it in running shoes. How is the path like? And is it covered all the way up? (Kaimon Dake) Thinking of doing it Aug 18
It took me about 2 hours to get up and 1.5 hour down if memory serves. I’m a faster hiker than average though. There’s a sign at the bottom that advises allowing about twice that long.
I did it in “cross country” running shoes. I think you’d be fine in any kind of running shoes if you don’t mind them getting dirty from mud.
The path was good in the winter. There are stairs anywhere it’s steep, except near the top where there are ladders and ropes you have to climb up. But I saw people in their 60s doing it so it’s not that hard.
I don’t understand what you mean by “covered”…
Have a good climb!
